In the contemporary city, time passes so fast that old symbols become outdated, and not due to time eroding but because they lose their context. Nothing dies of old age anymore.
A big difference exists between the country side (rural) – where aged symbols are metamorphosed into rites and the city (urban) where outdated symbols are simply lost. The city has no long term memory and the society modeling after it loses its property of retaining cultural heritage, every social product being a product made to expire when its local context is lost.
Modern man does not need superman anymore. Because no one needs to be saved anymore, he simply dies, remaining an impression in dusty magazines or on some internet “archives”.
I added to the existing context the actual formal interdiction of superman. I considered the transparent phone booths being the informal already given one, my intervention claimed to be the last drop in the death of superman.

The question is “Why?” Why do we kill our symbols? Why nothing dies of old age anymore? Why do we abandon not only Superman, but also Cinderella and Gene Kelly (or Fred Astaire - depending on the movie :P) and the hats worn by people on the streets. I suppose (and this is just a guess) we want always something bigger (than yesterday) and Superman didn’t take enough steroids for our society.

Nothing is everlasting. The world is shifting and changing, we can't rely on volcanoes or aliens anymore! Oh, maybe on the fast food, though. You should make most of the relic phone booths, they are the borderline between honor, care and bravery and a schizophrenic fuss of people of bungee jumpers.
Sundrop: Regarding why we kill, I tried to give an funny but true answer with this photographs of a constructed reality. The phone booth is transparent, nobody did it on purpose, it’s just the city’s way of evolving and leaving behind symbols. We did not abandoned Superman, it just lost its reason. His powers have no value, we can nuke him, use anthrax, Ebola, we can shoot a missile right to Krypton and vaporize the whole thing. We are gods, until another Nietzsche will tell us we died, but this time we will kill ourselves. The fall of civilizations does not exists, fall = progress, civilization = nothing. As you said, we want something bigger, super size me...
Cisu: We can’t rely on anything. Superman is recent-past symbol, and recent symbols are doomed not to become anything more.
Think about Strauss’s Myth approach, Superman is not a Trickster and I can’t see any general human contradiction that might have leaded to him becoming a Myth. (this always made me wonder why is he considered a structuralist, contradiction = conflictualism, as with all good theories :) )
We make them too fast, we kill them young. Relying on something would mean giving the element more power that he is able to hold, and that would break it. It’s a shiny world, that’s why strong things are made from steel – look at guns.

şi totuşi există Barthes cu mitologiile lui, care ne spune că nu sunt moarte miturile, ele numai îmbracă altfel de forme în societatea contemporană - să zicem mitul purităţii care este fundamental în alchimie şi care revine în obsesia noastră de a curăţa totul, a ucide germenii, vezi reclamele la detergent etc. asta dacă nu îl mai credem pe Jung cu ale sale structuri arhetipale ale psihicului, aceleaşi indiferent de epocă. dar eu îl cred :-)
sau ce să mai vorbim de mitul sfârşitului lumii, parcă zilele trecute era aşteptat din nou? (superbă cartea lui Boia despre asta, O istorie fără sfârşit). de fapt, toată şcoala de cercetare a imaginarului, născută în Franţa, merge în direcţia asta, că miturile şi simbolurile sunt structuri imaginare perene, fără de care nu am putea fiinţa ca oameni.

Eu nu am vrut să spun că sunt moarte. Dar cred că facem schimbările mult prea repede. De la Barthes cu Mitologiile sale a trecut ceva timp, deși nu ni se pare mult dar măsoară-l în ani ai internetului. Boomul din ultimii 20-30 de ani a fost imens și deși o mare parte din argumentația lui rămâne validă, unele lucruri sunt neaplicabile. Moda de exemplu nu mai poate fi explicată cum a făcut-o el, dacă cu 20 de ani în urmă geek-ii erau marginalizați și priviți ca niște ciudați, acum ei conduc lumea și se plătesc bani grei pentru geek-ness. Dacă geek-ul a devenit puternic, de ce ar mai avea nevoie de superman ? Dacă el descoperise două societăți - noi vs Japonia, acum ar descoperi doar una - facebook. :)
Spune-mi tu un mit pe care Barthes l-ar analiza și l-ar putea diseca așa cum a făcut-o cu detergentul, în contextul actual. Cu ce am înlocuit vinul ? Detergentul ? Îmi pare rău, nu știu cum să explic pentru că nu este chiar domeniul meu (sincer l-am descoperit în liceu pentru că găsisem că este Marxist, promit că am să-l mai citesc, pur și simplu am uitat...) dar înțeleg la ce te referi prin el. Mai mult, nu toate semnele ajung mituri, corect ?
La Jung arhetipul nu se confundă cu mitul. Iar Jung e și multă poveste, na am spus-o. Întotdeauna când mă raportez la psihanaliști povestea începe cu Lacan, pur și simplu nu diger celelalte teorii - spune-i prostie dacă vrei.
Evident, chestia astea s-a mai spus, au mai fost și alte treceri de la o epocă la alta, alte apocalipse, alte revolte, una mai reală și unică decât alta. Dar dacă asta e mai deosebită ? Așa ne-am întrebat de fiecare dată...
Din cauza asta apreciez postmodernismul - antagonismul față de toate sistemele cu care ne-am obișnuit până acum.
Mulțumesc pentru recomandare (Boia). Spun iar, nu cred că am omorât miturile, cum nu l-am omorât nici pe Dumnezeu, dar le restrângem.
Cam asta a fost explicația mea semidoctă dar sinceră! Nu vreau să te contrazic prea mult pe linia asta pentru că am șanse reduse de reușită.
